The Blue Mountains Australia Day Awards recognise and reward those citizens who have a consistent record of excellence, who have made outstanding achievements in their field and have contributed in a significant way to the Blue Mountains community.

Nominations are sought for the:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Sportsperson of the Year

Nominations are sought for Blue Mountains residents of excellence from all backgrounds and fields of endeavour including community service, humanitarian, business, science and technology, arts and entertainment, sport, education and environment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominees must be Australian citizens
  • Nominees must be residents of the Blue Mountains Local Government Area
  • Awards will not be granted posthumously
  • Local, State and Federal politicians and vice-regal officers are not eligible
  • Groups of people or couples will not normally be eligible though in exceptional cases the selection panels reserve the right to consider such nominations
  • Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in subsequent years
  • Recipients of a Local Citizen Award cannot be nominated (or receive a second award) for the same Award Category, but can be considered for recognition in a separate category in following years eg. Young Citizen of the Year and then Citizen of the Year.

Selection Criteria

Regard will be given to the nominee's achievements in the year immediately prior to the receipt of the Award, as well as their past achievements and ongoing contribution to the Blue Mountains community.

The selection criteria are:

  • Demonstrated excellence in their field
  • Significant contribution to the Blue Mountains community
  • An inspirational role model for the Blue Mountains community

Council will give consideration to the following in assessing and comparing nominations against the above criteria:

  • Personal, academic and professional achievements - past, current and future Contribution in the relevant field (how has the nominee ‘put back' into their field to benefit others)
  • Demonstrated leadership, innovation and creativity
  • Personal interests and community involvement
  • Contribution to the Blue Mountains community
  • Contribution to development of regional community and/or economy
  • Future goals and likely impact
  • Degree of difficulty of the achievement and sacrifices made Voluntary involvement
  • Nature and length of involvement

Awards Selection

  • Nomination forms need to be received by the Council by the closing date (To be Confirmed)
  • Upon receipt of nominations a letter will be sent to the nominator thanking them for participating in the program and explaining the Awards process.
  • Nomination forms will be assessed to ensure nominees are eligible (ie. Australian citizens, not Members of Parliament etc).
  • Judging will take place during early January.
  • Nominators will be notified of the results in mid January.
  • Award recipients will be notified and will receive their awards at the Blue Mountains Australia Daym Ceremony on Monday 26 January 2015.
  • All entries will be held in the strictest confidence.

Advertisements calling for nominations will run during November 2016.
