Blue Mountains City Council

Community Gardens

Community gardens are gardens created and maintained on public or private land by people who come together to learn about, participate in and share the rewards of gardening activities. Community gardens provide a place for healthy recreation, environmental education and creative endeavours of all kinds.

Community gardens have economic benefits, whilst providing a local food source and reducing food miles. Community gardens can contribute to improved health and well-being of the community as well as strengthen and build sustainable communities. There is no standard or universal model of a community garden. Each garden project will reflect the site-specific characteristics and those of the community who manage and work in it. Community gardens provide opportunities for recreation, education and for social gatherings.

Policy and Guidelines

On 19 April 2011, Blue Mountains City Council approved a Policy to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Council with respect to the establishment and management of community gardens on land in the Blue Mountains owned and / or managed by Council. At the same time, Council approved a set of Guidelines that guides community in the required process to establish a community garden in the Blue Mountains. An application form is incorporated in the Guidelines. The documents can be downloaded from the list on the right-hand column of this page.
