Last chance to have your say on St Johns Park play space upgrade

The community is invited to have their say on final designs for a new play space at St Johns Park at Blaxland Oval.

The Blue Mountains City Council has secured a $500,000 grant to upgrade the play space at St Johns Park. The funds will provide new equipment and improvements that make the space inclusive for users of all abilities.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “We know parks are important to our community and we are always looking for opportunities to improve these spaces. “St Johns Park provides a play space for so many users. This significant upgrade will help make the park inclusive and accessible for more members of our community.

“Most current play equipment will be retained in the upgrade plus there will be a new mammoth swing, accessible carousel, voice tube, garden chimes and an arch bridge. A boat seat and an expression seat will also be added to the existing swing set. The new equipment will be suitable for all levels of ability, including older children.”

Other proposed changes include a new accessible toilet, picnic and seating areas, additional tree plantings, accessible parking spaces and connected pathways, fencing near the road, and surrounding landscaping.

The new plans were developed after extensive community consultation, including an online survey and a face-to-face community consultation session, with more than 100 attending.

The concept for the park evolved in two parts. The first part is a toilet and storage component that will be constructed shortly. The second part is the play space upgrade, which will take place this year.

St Johns Park is one of five local parks in the Blue Mountains designed to cater for several suburbs or towns.

Blue Mountains City Council received funding through the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Programme for the project.

The community can provide input through the online survey which is open until Monday 13 September.
