Have your say on the future of major tourist destinations

29 Apr 2021

Council is inviting feedback on some of the best known Blue Mountains tourist attractions, as it prepares the Southern Escarpment Masterplan.

This Masterplan will guide the future growth and development of major visitor destinations at Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls.

Once finalised, Council will use the Masterplan to guide its planning of nature, culture and tourism based recreation and to attract public and private sector investment in the visitor economy.

Blue Mountains Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said: “I encourage community members to give their feedback on the highly significant tourist destinations on the Southern Escarpment of the Blue Mountains.

“Community input is greatly valued in planning the nature of tourism and recreation at these sites that are important, not only to our region’s many visitors, but to local residents too.

“This valuable input will help us to balance the needs of visitors and locals and will guide us in how we can improve amenity for residents, while providing facilities worthy of a world class tourist destination.”

The Southern Escarpment Masterplan will focus on public land managed by Council, including Crown and community land with high levels of visitor use.

It covers the destinations and associated facilities on the southern side of Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls, including popular visitor precincts such as Echo Point and Katoomba Falls, as well as other smaller locations, such as the lookouts along Cliff Drive. See the map for details.

The Masterplan will allow Council to address the growing demand on visitor facilities by residents and visitors and to address the issue of ageing infrastructure, to bring it in line with current safety and accessibility standards, patterns of visitor use and expectations. The Masterplan will also focus on key connections to and from town centres, and between precincts.

The Southern Escarpment Masterplan is one of a number of planning projects that Council is currently undertaking to shape the future of the City, including the Katoomba Masterplan and the Echo Point Reserve Plan of Management.  Ensuring that these projects are delivered in a coordinated and integrated manner is an important part of the planning process and a key priority for Council.
