Garden flat expo to profile affordable housing option to meet diverse needs
Blue Mountains City Council is partnering with Wentworth Community Housing and other supporters of the ‘Heading Home – Ending Homelessness Here’ project to present a Garden Flat Expo in Springwood on 10 November.
The Expo is a one-stop shop for home owners who are looking for an affordable product they can build in their backyard and rent and will bring local experts and businesses together. Exhibitors include town planners, bushfire consultants, mortgage brokers, banks, real estate agents and garden flat builders.
“One of the key outcomes of our Blue Mountains Community Strategic Plan, endorsed by the community, is for residents to have access to a range of housing that meets diverse needs and is affordable,” Mayor Cr Mark Greenhill said. “This adds to the potential mix of housing options.”
As part of the Expo, Wentworth Community Housing is offering a limited number of incentive packages for home owners who want to build garden flats and make them available to someone facing homelessness. These packages will include guaranteed rental income and tenant management.
‘Heading Home – Ending Homelessness Here’ is a collaboration of 16 community organisations, businesses and individuals who are working towards ending homelessness in the Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Penrith local government areas.
With NSW experiencing an increase of 37% in homelessness, the highest increase of any State or Territory in Australia (according to ABS Census data released on 15 March 2018), ‘Heading Home’ is looking at innovative solutions that can help generate new low cost housing.
“We welcome innovative ideas to improve housing affordability. I encourage interested homeowners to visit the event and see if this initiative is something that would work for them.”
