Trivia with a Twist Funds East Timor Scholarships

6 November

Women and girls in East Timor will be the beneficiaries of $2,600 raised by the Blue Mountains Library and Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters Quiz for Timor, a trivia quiz with a bookish twist held in September.

There were over 100 trivia buffs packed into the Katoomba Community Hall and everyone had a great night. Apart from the head-scratching literary questions, much was learnt about East Timor and the work of the Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters (BMETS).

All the money raised goes to the BMETS Scholarship Fund for Girls and Women in East Timor - a project run through the auspices of East Timorese NGO, Alola - and will continue to fund young women like Elsa Pinto (pictured) in their studies at secondary and tertiary levels.

Elsa studied a Bachelor of Peace and Democracy with her BMETS Scholarship and has just received an Australian Government scholarship for a Masters in Community Development at Victoria University. Elsa recently gave a talk at Lyttleton Stores in Lawson about Women and Sustainability in East Timor.

BMETS member Lesley Sammon, said, “The Quiz for Timor was great fun for a great cause.

The event was a wonderful collaboration and a tribute to the community involvement of the Blue Mountains Library and Council with a great bunch of workers who decorated, MC’d, checked and scored the answers and created and set up the event.”

Special mention must be made of those who cooked for the night and the super kitchen team who were on their feet all night and thanks to Hominy Bakery in Katoomba for their incredibly generous donation of bread and other bakery goodies, and also to the Blue Mountains Food Co-Op for their contributions.
