Investigations into Media Allegations Against Blue Mountains City Council

Over recent days, very serious allegations have been made in the media against the Council, and against individual Council officers, in relation to the management of asbestos in Council owned properties, and in relation to the recruitment of staff and consultants.

All of these allegations will be independently investigated, in accordance with the Council resolutions passed at the Council meeting on Tuesday 14 November. The investigations will be thorough and completed as quickly as possible.

In order to achieve independence from Council and Council officers during the investigations, and to ensure that all legal issues, including potential liability issues, are addressed, the Council has engaged its solicitor, Trevor Cork of McPhee Kelshaw to appoint and oversee independent and appropriately experienced investigators to conduct the investigations.

The investigations will allow us to get to the truth of the matters, help us resolve any issues and maintain community confidence in Council’s performance.

We have been proactive in notifying the Office of Local Government and ICAC, as oversight agencies, of the Council’s intention to initiate these investigations. The Council has been working with SafeWork NSW on all active asbestos management matters and will continue to do so. With regard to the investigations, the Council will maintain open communication with all relevant agencies during the process.

The need to identify and manage asbestos containing material is a challenge faced by Councils across NSW. As matters of potential asbestos containing material are progressively raised, Council will continue to respond appropriately in accordance with its Asbestos Management Plan and procedures and take the necessary steps to address the issue and to minimise risks as a matter of urgency.

The safety, health and wellbeing of our community and our employees are of paramount importance to the Council and the Council takes asbestos management seriously. We are also committed to good governance and maintaining a transparent and reputable organisation in which our community can have confidence.

The community can be assured that the Council will continue to maintain its focus on delivering services and customer service during this process.
