Second Hand Saturday
Bullaburra Trial
Saturday 12 September 2009
Blue Mountains City Council is trialling an initiative called Second Hand Saturday (SHS) in the town of Bullaburra. It will run in conjunction with Bullaburra's upcoming Annual Cleanup Service in September 2009.
Second Hand Saturday encourages homes to hold a garage sale on the Saturday prior to their annual cleanup service. Council then offers to promote all the garage sales happening in Bullaburra. This is intended to increase resource recovery from the Service by facilitating re-use of items instead of disposal.
The Bullaburra annual cleanup service begins from Monday 14 September 2009, so Second Hand Saturday will be held on Saturday 12 September 2009.

Bullaburra residents can register their property with Council by returning a completed registration form in the promotional flyer, which may be downloaded at right. Registered properties will have their garage sale and address advertised in the Blue Mountains Gazette on 9 September 2009 (unless they request not to). Registered properties will be sent a poster to display at their garage sale on the day and an information package outlining possible alternatives such as charities.
Any remaining items can then be placed out for the Annual Cleanup Service which begins on Monday 14 September 2009. The usual service guidelines regarding materials, amounts and presentation apply.
Common Questions:
- Do I have to register my garage sale?
No, but it is the only way to gain the benefit of free advertising and the promotional poster. - Do I have to sell my items?
No, you can give them away if you prefer. - What do I do with anything that is not sold or taken?
You can try:- Blue Mountains Freecycle: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Freecycle_Blue_Mountains/; or
- The Salvation Army, Katoomba (02) 4782 5124; or
- St Vincent de Paul, Lawson (02) 4759 2584; or
- The Re-use Shed at Katoomba Waste Management Facility, fees apply; or
- Put it out on your kerb for collection with the Annual Cleanup Service, starting from Monday 14 September 2009 (this will go to landfill unless it is metal).
- I live in another Blue Mountains town, can I be involved?
You are very welcome to visit the garage sales in Bullaburra on Second Hand Saturday, but you cannot host a garage sale in another town as part of this event. - When will Second Hand Saturday come to other parts of the Blue Mountains?
This Bullaburra SHS event is a trial. If it is successful it may be offered to other towns in the Blue Mountains, but at this stage it is only planned for Bullaburra.
