Special Needs

Large Print

Large Print books are available at all library branches and include popular fiction and non-fiction titles. They are often used by those with a range of print disabilities including older people with diminished vision, individuals with sight loss, those with learning difficulties or literacy difficulties. There are no restrictions on borrowing large print titles.

Talking Books

Talking books, also known as recorded books or audio books, are available at all branches specifically for people with print disabilities, that is, people who cannot independently gain access to information in print form because they are blind or vision impaired, unable to hold or manipulate a book, have perceptual or other disabilities which limit their ability to follow a line of print or affect their concentration or because they lack sufficient literacy or language skills to comprehend information in printed form.

Talking books are available in cassette and CD. Most are unabridged and, in the case of CDs,  include chapter markers for ease picking up a story where you left off. Borrowers registered as print disabled may borrow up to ten (10) talking books at one time. Other borrowers may borrow only two (2) at any one time.

Adult Literacy

A small collection of graded books for beginning and/or struggling readers but specifically written for adult readers. Available across all branches.

Readers

A range of graded books for young beginning and/or struggling readers are available across all branches. These books can be read by all users but are particularly popular for use alongside school home-readers and for extending remedial reading programs.

Free Home Library Service

In partnership with Blue Mountains Libraries, the Blue Mountains Volunteer Home Visitors runs a free home library service for people who are frail aged and/or people living with a disability who may require assistance accessing the Blue Mountains Libraries.

The services operate out of four of the mountains local neighbourhood centres and is supported by volunteers who provide home visits to pick up and drop off Library books at the local libraries as part of a social support service. If people would like to see if they are eligible for this service, know someone who may benefit or would just like to find out more, please contact one of the following neighbourhood centres and ask to speak to the Coordinator:

  • Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre on (02) 4782 1117
