Blue Mountains City Library staff have selected web sites in a number of subject areas which are considered to be of high information value and representative of their field. Click on the links below to view links in a particular subject area.
NSW.net Accessed Databases
NSW.net supplies public libraries with free access for all branches to the following databases. These databases are available from all library PCs, no password required and some are available from home PCs. Select Blue Mountains Library in the top right hand corner and click "go".
- Australia/NZ Reference Centre
Australia and New Zealand specific magazines, newspapers and news wires, reference books and company information providing local perspectives on current events, business, sports, and many other subjects. Available from all library PCs (no password required) or from your home PC using your library card barcode to enter. - MasterFILE Premier
Designed specifically for public libraries, the MasterFILE Premier database provides full text for more than 2,100 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 650 full text reference books, 84,074 biographies, 86,135 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. - Consumer Health Complete (Access via the ANZ Reference Centre link)
A comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health information, covering topics such as aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs and alcohol, fitness, nutrition and dietetics, children's health, men and women's health, etc. Available from all library PCs (no password required) or from your home PC using your library card barcode to enter. - Science Reference Center
Science Reference Center provides easy access to a multitude of full text science oriented content. Contains full text for 640 science encyclopaedias, reference books, periodicals. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth and space science, environmental science, health and medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science and society, scientists, technology and wildlife. - Literary Reference Centre (Access via the ANZ Reference Centre link)
Intended for public, academic and high school libraries, the primary goal of LRC is to assist high school and undergraduate English and Humanities students with homework and research assignments of a literary nature. - Novelist (Access via the ANZ Reference Centre link)
A fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 135,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists. - GreenFILE
GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done at each level to minimize these effects. Multidisciplinary by nature, GreenFILE draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology. Topics covered include global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. - Standards Australia Online Public Library Service (Public network access)
A comprehensive online collection of International and Australian standards, many with full text coverage. Where copyright of a standard is not held by Standards Australia full text is not available, however, instructions on how it might be purchased are normally provided. Available from all library PCs (no password required).

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Library Edition offers three libraries: Encyclopaedia Britannica for adults, Britannica Student for high school students, and Britannica Junior for primary school students. Each provides a suite of features to browse the corresponding encyclopaedia as well as standard searching options. - Magpies: The Source
Access this children's literature online database from any library PC by clicking on "Login to The Source with an IP address". Then search for books and poems by title (or first line for poems), author, subject, genre, or age suitability; or search the awards DB for winning titles and authors. - Auslit
AustLit is a non-profit collaboration between eight Australian Universities and the National Library of Australia providing authoritative information on hundreds of thousands of creative and critical Australian literature works relating to more than 75,000 Australian authors and literary organisations. Its coverage spans 1780 to the present day and describes Australian literature published in a range of print and electronic information sources. It also makes available selected critical articles and creative writing in full text. - New South Wales Family History Document Service's Internet History Resources
IHR provides you with images of historical documents which contain information which can help you trace people who lived and worked in New South Wales during the period 1850 - 1920. These records complement and build on information you can obtain from the Pioneers and Births, Deaths and Marriages indexes and the Genealogical Research Kit. The service provides records in the following categories - Directories, Electoral Rolls, Miners and Mining Leases, Land Purchasers and Lessees, Farmers, Graziers, Shearers and Station Hands, Other Occupations Including Civil Servants, Teachers etc., Voters, Petitioners, Friendly Society Members etc. We will add to the present selection as material becomes available.
