LAWSON TOWN CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT

Lawson Public Toilets

ECO Design Architects was appointed by Council to undertake the location study, community consultation and the design and documentation for the new Lawson Public Toilets. The DA was approved on 19 November 2009. The tender for construction was advertised in December with a report going to Council on 23 February 2010 recommending Zadro Constructions Pty Ltd (Zadro) as the preferred contractor. Zadro has been appointed as the successful contractor and works will commence on site on 6 April 2010, with the works anticipated to be completed by the end of June 2010.

The design for the toilets incorporates rainwater harvesting using underground water tanks, energy efficiency using solar PV cells and a 'raingarden' which will be watered using the hand basin run off. The design concept is displayed at right.

Please note the ramp from Staples Crescent to the Mid Mountains Community Centre will not be accessible during the construction works.

Welcome to the New Lawson Town Centre

Lawson has been given a new lease on life with the first stage of the town centre redevelopment completed in May 2008. If you haven’t been to Lawson for a while you should come and have a look at the revitalised town centre – you won't believe your eyes!

Five months of construction work has seen some major improvements, including the installation of new services, roads and car parking, landscaping, a Village Green and a Town Square.

Key features of the redeveloped town centre are the newly constructed Town Square, Village Green and the 'Welcome to Lawson' entry statement, which is a low wall constructed from the bricks recovered from the old bakery building.

The jewel in the crown of the town centre will be Heatherbrae House which the Council recently purchased. The historic house has been identified as a special place for the community and the purchase of long sought after property means that the community of Lawson will be able to have the village centrepiece desired by so many to enjoy for years to come.

Over 400 people from the Lawson and mid mountains community celebrated the official opening of the first stage of the Lawson Town Centre redevelopment on Saturday 9 May in perfect autumn sunshine. Blue Mountains City Council hosted the community celebration in the new town square with a Welcome to Country from Darug and Gundungurra traditional owners, the official opening, a BBQ lunch, a photographic display, music and children's activities and a very popular open-house at historic Heatherbrae house.

Background

The Lawson Town Centre Redevelopment project arose as a result of the proposed widening of the Great Western Highway (Section 2 Lawson).

Blue Mountains City Council has been working with the community and the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) to develop a Master Plan for the Lawson Town Centre that will facilitate the widening of the Great Western Highway to be undertaken by the RTA and to allow the development of a new vibrant Town Centre.

The redevelopment of the Lawson Town Centre remains a complex and innovative project that requires a staged development process involving: alignment with RTA plans; land acquisitions; construction of new road infrastructure, footpaths and car parking; stormwater and drainage works; undergrounding of electrical services; landscaping; redevelopment of the shops; and changes to highway and parking infrastructure.

The objective is to design and construct the infrastructure for the Town Centre ensuring the future development is managed and makes a positive impact to the essential physical and natural qualities, which give the area its distinct character, and maintains and strengthens the commercial and cultural life of the village.

In developing a new Town Centre for Lawson, the project has taken into account social, environmental and economic considerations. It is important that the development assists in the growth of a healthy community lifestyle, contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gasses and reduces the pollution of urban run-off, and also supports the local economy and provides employment opportunities.
