Blue Mountains City Council

Katoomba Civic Centre Redevelopment

Open for Business

Blue Mountains City Council, in partnership with the NSW Government, celebrated the re-opening of the Katoomba Civic Centre on 3 December 2010. Despite the wet weather, the building contractor, Zadro Constructions, successfully completed the project, to the delight of residents, library patrons, business owners and the Katoomba/Leura Seniors.

The Katoomba Civic Centre make-over includes an upgrade of the well-used community facilities, a new public connection to the planned Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and a selection of new shops in the Katoomba Town Centre Arcade.

Mayor, Cr Daniel Myles is enthusiastic about the completion of the redevelopment and what it has to offer the residents, visitors and business community in the Upper Mountains.

"The improved Katoomba Civic Centre and Town Centre Arcade have been well-designed with an impressive entrance and thoroughfare, improved access to the Katoomba Library and community facilities, and expanded retail opportunities in Katoomba."

The project has been funded by Blue Mountains City Council with the NSW Government contributing $1 million towards the redevelopment of the Katoomba Civic Centre, as part of its commitment to the Katoomba Revitalisation Project and to provide a connection to the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

Mayor Myles acknowledged the patience of residents, business owners and visitors during the redevelopment, "Council would like to sincerely thank the existing and former tenants of the Katoomba Civic Centre and Town Centre Arcade, the patrons and staff of Katoomba Library, Blue Mountains Food Services and the Katoomba/Leura Senior Citizens."

"The Council also warmly welcomes the new tenants of the Katoomba Town Centre Arcade."

Councillor Terri Hamilton, Chairperson of the Katoomba Library Technical Advisory Panel, said of the completed project, "The redevelopment of the Katoomba Civic Centre is a very positive outcome for the community."

Katoomba Library will continue in its current location until such time as it can be relocated to the new premises within the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre building in 2012. The new Library will be twice the size of the existing Library.

The refurbished Katoomba Town Centre Arcade offers an exciting retail opportunity to existing or new businesses, with a selection of shops available to lease. Further information is available by contacting Theo Poulos Real Estate on (02) 4782 1888 or www.theopoulos.com.

Stage 1 Construction

The redevelopment of the Katoomba Civic Centre aims to achieve a new public connection to the planned Blue Mountains Cultural Centre as well as upgrading the well-used community facilities in the Civic Centre.

The redevelopment of the Katoomba Civic Centre will take place in two stages to allow for the retention of the library in its current location until such time as it can be relocated to the new premises within the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre building.

The major redevelopment of the Katoomba Civic Centre commenced on 19 October 2009 by contractor, Zadro Constructions. The focus of the work to date has been the demolition of existing structures, paving and stairs. The Civic Centre Arcade shops are open for business as usual and the Katoomba Library and dining area remain open with the operating hours unchanged. Blue Mountains City Council advise that the public toilets in the Civic Centre Arcade are closed and the community are reminded of the toilet facilities close by in Studleigh Place, Katoomba Street. The Seniors Room is also closed for at least twelve weeks.

Residents are advised that the Tibby Whalan Hall in the Civic Centre is now closed for an estimated 2-year period. However, with the exception of unforeseen circumstances, residents are assured that the library and Civic Centre facilities are available for use throughout the construction work.

A site office has been established in the Tibby Whalan Hall. For further information contact:
