In Term 3 and 4, 2009, schools in the Blue Mountains participated in the Sustainable Gardening for Life program.
Ten schools joined the 10 week program of:
- Kitchen Garden in a box
- School garden revitalisation for spring and summer
- Clay modelling
- Harvesting and harvest activities

14 schools participated in the Outdoor Classroom workshop which linked curriculum and gardening activities. For more information see reference: Outdoor Classroom - a handbook for school gardens by Carolyn Nuttall and Janet Millington.
The program was funded by Water for Life to enhance learning about water wise gardening. Council provided organisation and resources. The North Katoomba Organic Community Gardens volunteers presented workshops and ran school based sessions. Footbeat Festival provided additional funds for participating schools.
