Emergency Management

An emergency can occur at any time, and can occur in many forms. Some of the more likely emergencies and how you can best prepare for them are listed below. A list of emergency contact numbers for various agencies can be obtained from the downloads area to the right.

Bushfire

To report any fire, dial triple zero (000) and ask for the Fire Brigade

A well prepared home with a well maintained asset protection zone is the best defence against loss or damage as a result of bushfire. More information about preparing your property can be found under Bushfire Protection on the menu to the left.

Further information relating to what to expect and what to do during a bushfire event can be obtained from the Blue Mountains District Office of the NSW Rural Fire Service, or from the Rural Fire Service website (www.rfs.nsw.gov.au).

Information for putting together a family emergency kit can be obtained from the downloads pane on the right side of this page.

Severe Storms

If your home has been damaged as a result of a severe storm, contact the SES on 132 500

Although storms can sometimes be predicted and a degree of forewarning provided, it can be difficult to know exactly what to expect or to prepare for the effects of a severe storm. A storm checklist that provides information of things you can do to best prepared yourself and your home can be obtained from the downloads area to the right.

After a storm has passed you will need to take some precautions to ensure the safety of yourself and your family. Stay away from fallen power lines, and keep clear of hanging or damaged trees. Further information is provided in the storm checklist.

Snowfall

Residents of the Blue Mountains who live at altitudes above 800m can expect to receive snowfalls from time to time during winter. Heavy snowfalls have the potential to close roads and railways, and affect the delivery of essential utilities such as power and water. The most common effect of heavy snowfall is isolation due to the closure of roads.
